Congrats – your Mumble (Murmur) server is live in Orbit Command! Mumble is a low-latency VoIP champ for gaming squads, podcasts, or team chats. But launching is just step one; now let's secure it, connect, and customize so you can chat crystal-clear without randoms crashing the party.
This guide is for newbies – we'll cover essentials like SuperUser setup and first connect. Takes 5-10 minutes. (If your server's not starting, check our other troubleshooting articles!)
Why Set Up Post-Launch?
- Security first: Default no-password = open to anyone. Set SuperUser to lock it down.
- Customization: Create channels, set perms – make it your voice hub.
- Easy access: Connect via client, invite friends, avoid public server drama.
- Orbit perks: Our panel makes console tweaks a breeze.
Tip: Back up your server now (Orbit Command > Backups tab) – protects configs.
Step 1: Log In to Orbit Command & Access Console
- Head to your MyRack client area > Services > Your Mumble server > GO TO CONTROL PANEL.
- In Orbit dashboard, click your server.
- Console tab – this is your command center. If offline, hit green Start.
Note: Logs should show "Server listening" – if errors, restart or check ports (default 64738).
Step 2: Set the SuperUser Password (Must-Do!)
By default, we set you a random password
- In console, look for:
-
<W>2025-12-12 21:17:01.528 1 => Password for 'SuperUser' set to 'SECUREPASSWORD'
-
Cant find the password? Lets fix that:
- In console, run:
murmur -supw YOUR_STRONG_PASSWORD(replace with a secure pass – 12+ chars, mix cases/symbols). - Hit Enter – it sets without output (check logs for confirmation).
- Restart server: Red Stop > Green Start.
Pro Tip: Edit murmur.ini (Files tab > murmur.ini) for advanced tweaks.
Step 3: Download & Connect with Mumble Client
- Grab the free Mumble client: mumble.info (Windows/Mac/Linux/mobile).
- Launch Mumble > Server > Connect > Add New.
- Fill in:
- Address: Your server's IP (from Orbit dashboard).
- Port: Your server's port (from Orbit dashboard).
- Username: Your nickname.
- Label: Fun name like "My Squad Hub".
- Connect – first time, enter SuperUser password when prompted (from Step 2).
- You may have to connect to the server as SuperUser for the first time with that password in the Mumble client. Then, use the server editor (right-click Root -> Edit -> Groups) to add your regular username to the admin group for ongoing admin privileges.
- Right-click root channel > Edit > Set ACLs/groups for admin perms.
You're in! Create channels (right-click > Add).
Step 4: Invite Friends & Test
- Share IP:port + password (if you set one in ini: welcometext or registerpassword).
- Test audio: Speak in a channel – adjust mic in Configure > Audio Wizard.
- Mobile? Mumble apps work too – same connect details.
Troubleshooting: Common Post-Launch Hitches
| Issue | Fix |
| "Invalid password" | Reset SuperUser (rerun -supw) or check ini for mismtaches |
| Can't connect | Wrong IP or Port? Double-check the dashboard |
| No sound | Client wizard: Run Audio Tuning. Server logs: Check for errors in console. |
| Open to public | Set registerpassword in ini > Restart. Or ACL deny outsiders. |
| High latency | Low resources? Up the RAM or check network (ping IP) |
Bonus: Level Up Your Mumble
- Channels/Groups: Wiki for ACLs – set voice perms, bans.
- Ice/Web Interface: Enable in ini for bots or web access (advanced).
- Auto-Start: Already on in Orbit – schedules for restarts.
- Cert for Security: Generate SSL in ini for encrypted chats.
- Mobile Setup: Plumble (Android) or Mumblefy (iOS) – same steps.

| Step | Action |
| 1 | Orbit Console > Start server |
