Updating rDNS/PTR Records

Need to set or change your reverse DNS (rDNS or PTR record) for your VPS IP? In Nebula Core you can initiate requests directly in the panel. This points your IP back to a hostname (e.g., 123.45.67.89 → server.yourdomain.com), boosting email deliverability and more. Requests are free, processed in 1-2 business days, and cause no downtime.

This guide is for beginners – we'll show how to submit from Nebula Core.

Pro tip: Set up your domain's forward A record first, as rDNS must match for verification!

Why Request rDNS in Nebula Core?

  • Self-service speed: Edit directly – no waiting for support.
  • Email boost: Matches forward DNS to avoid spam filters.
  • Logging perks: Custom hostnames for easier tracking.
  • IPv4/IPv6 support: Handles both, for seamless changes.

Prep: Ensure your hostname resolves to the IP (set A/AAAA record in DNS).

Step 1: Log In to Nebula Core

  1. Go to MyRack at https://my.lunarracks.com > Services > Your VPS > OPEN CONTROL PANEL.
  2. Or use your direct Nebula login (from welcome email).

Tip: Bookmark Nebula Core for direct access.

Step 2: Gather Required Info

Before requesting:

  • Your IP Address: In Nebula Core > Overview > IP Addresses.
  • Desired Hostname: e.g., "mail.yourdomain.com" – must point to the IP (add A record in your DNS and verify with dig yourhostname.com).
  • Reason (optional): Helps us prioritize, e.g., "For email server".

Step 3: Edit the rDNS Record

  1. In Nebula Core, navigate to the VPS > Network Tab
  2. Select your IP from the list.
  3. Click the edit icon (pencil)
  4. Add rDNS Entry.
    • Hostname: Your desired FQDN.
  5. Click Update.

Pro Tip: Your rDNS entry will not update on your Network tab until the request has been processed.

Step 4: Track & Verify the Update

  1. Check Nebula Core > VPS > Network.
  2. Test: Run dig -x YOUR_IP, nslookup YOUR_IP, or use MXToolbox – should return your hostname.
  3. If canceled, we will automatically open a ticket for you.

Note: Issues? Refresh Nebula Core or wait for DNS cache (can take up to 48 hours).

Bonus: rDNS Best Practices

  • Match DNS: Forward (A) and reverse should align for trust.
